Dreamgirls - Savoy Theatre

Preview by Lizzie Guilfoyle

THIRTY five years after the ground-breaking original Broadway production, Tony Award-winning musical Dreamgirls will receive its UK premiere at the Savoy Theatre, where it runs from November 19, 2016 to March 11, 2017.

Inspired by R&B music acts in 1960s America, Dreamgirls transports audiences to a revolutionary time in American music history; charting the tumultuous journey of a young female singing trio from Chicago, Illinois called ‘The Dreams’, as they learn the hard lesson that show business is as tough as it is fabulous.

Dreamgirls features the classic songs And I Am Telling You I’m Not Going, I Am Changing, Listen and One Night Only.

Dreamgirls will be directed and choreographed by Tony and Olivier award-winning Casey Nicholaw (The Book of Mormon, Aladdin, Something Rotten!) and will star Amber Riley in the role of Effie White.

Best known for playing Glee’s Mercedes Jones, Amber Riley also won series 17 of Dancing With The Stars – America’s counterpart to Strictly Come Dancing – and appeared in the 2015 TV special The Wiz Live!

With book and lyrics by Tom Eyen and music by Henry Krieger, the original Broadway production of Dreamgirls, directed and choreographed by Michael Bennett, opened in 1981 and subsequently won six Tony Awards. A film adaptation in 2006 starred Jennifer Hudson, Beyoncé Knowles and Anika Noni Rose.

Further casting for the London production will be announced in due course.

The Menier Chocolate Factory’s revival of Funny Girl, starring Sheridan Smith as Fanny Brice, runs at the Savoy Theatre from April 9 to October 8, 2016.
