East - Greenwich Playhouse

Preview by Lizzie Guilfoyle

TALKING Props Productions is presenting Steven Berkoff’s East at Greenwich Playhouse – from September 22 to October 4, 2009.

Set against a backdrop of 1950’s East End London, East explores the lives of five cockney souls in a concoction of love, sex and violence.

An explosion of cockney rhyming slang meets classical Shakespeare in what is described as a turbulent revolt of movement, physicality, characterisation and raw theatre.

As Steven Berkoff explained: “A scream or a shout of pain. It is revolt…East could be the east side of any city where the unveneered blast off at each other in their own compounded argot as if the ordinary language of polite communication was as dead as the people who uttered it”

Adrian Figueroa directs a cast that includes Charlie Fairless (as Mike), Mekala Oxley (Les), Jennifer Levitt (Sylv), Damien Hallett (Mum) and Matthew Dando (Dad).

Tickets: £11, £9 concessions.

Times: Tuesday to Saturday at 7.30pm, Sunday at 4pm.
