From Here To Eternity - Shaftesbury Theatre

Preview by Lizzie Guilfoyle

NEXT autumn, the much-rumoured musical adaptation of From Here To Eternity will receive its world premiere at the Shaftesbury Theatre, where it opens on October 23, 2013 following previews from September 30.

Based on James Jones’ 1951 award-winning novel that inspired the classic film starring Burt Lancaster and Deborah Kerr, the show will feature lyrics by multi award-winner Tim Rice, music by newcomer Stuart Brayson and a book by Bill Oakes.

Set on the island of Oahu shortly before the attack on Pearl Harbour and based loosely on Jones’ own experiences of life in the Hawaiian Division’s 27th Infantry, From Here To Eternity is a tale of passion and honour among a group of soldiers.

Tim Rice is well known for his long-standing partnership with Andrew Lloyd Webber and shows such as Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Evita, Jesus Christ Superstar and, more recently, The Wizard of Oz. His other credits include Chess, Beauty and the Beast, Heathcliff, The Lion King and Aida.

From Here To Eternity will be directed by Tamara Harvey, former Associate Director at the Bush Theatre, whose credits include Educating Rita (Menier Chocolate Factory), The Kitchen Sink (Bush Theatre), Plague Over England (Finborough and Duchess Theatres) and Tell Me On A Sunday (national tour).

Casting has yet to be announced.

Rock of Ages continues at the Shaftesbury Theatre until January 6, 2013. It will be followed – from March 6 to September 1, 2013 – by Burn the Floor.
