Full casting announced for Unexpected Joy at Southwark Playhouse

CASTING has been announced for the European premiere of Bill Russell and Janet Hood’s new musical Unexpected Joy, which runs at Southwark Playhouse from September 5 to September 29, 2018.

An all-female cast includes Janet Fullerlove as Joy; Jodie Jacobs as Rachel; Melanie Marshall as Lou; and Kelly Sweeney as Tamara.

Unexpected Joy is the story of three generations of female singers, long-held family tensions and a week together where change is in the air.

Joy, a baby boomer pop star, is visited by her daughter, Rachel and granddaughter Tamara. Rachel is married to a prominent televangelist, so Joy is reluctant to divulge that she’s planning to marry Lou, another singer who happens to be a woman.

A week with all four together is bound to lead to tension, laughter, discoveries and happiness that really is unexpected.

Janet Fullerlove’s stage credits include: Oxy and the Morons (Ipswich New Wolsey), Fiddler on the Roof (Grange Park Opera House), Shakespeare in Love (Noel Coward Theatre), Fortune’s Fool (The Old Vic), The Taming of the Shrew (Royal Shakespeare Company), The Beggar’s Opera (Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre), Macbeth (Shakespeare’s Globe), Shouting at Shadows (Cheltenham Everyman Theatre), and Cheryomushki, Sweeney Todd, West Side Story and Marriage of Figaro (Pimilico Opera).

Her screen credits include: Autopsy: The Last Days of Lucille Ball, Holby City, Longford, Tipping the Velvet, Tomorrow La Scala!and Jack The Ripper Diaries.

Jodie Jacobs’ numerous stage credits include: Bananaman, Man of Peel and Carrie (Southwark Playhouse), Disaster! The Musical, M.A.D (Charing Cross Theatre), Oliver! (Grange Park Opera House), Rock of Ages (Shaftesbury Theatre), Chess, Footloose and Cats (UK Tour), Me and Juliet (Finborough Theatre), State Fair (Trafalgar Studios), Rent (Garrick Theatre), I Love You Because (Landor Theatre), Little Shop of Horrors (Menier Chocolate Factory), Evita (Adelphi Theatre), Fame (Aldwych Theatre), We Will Rock You (Dominion Theatre) and Peter Pan (Richmond Theatre).

Melanie Marshall’s stage credits include: Guys and Dolls (Manchester Royal Exchange/UK Tour), Jane Eyre (National Theatre/Bristol Old Vic/UK Tour), The Infidel (Theatre Royal, Stratford), Fela! (Broadway/National Theatre), Hot Mikado (UK Tour), Fame (Aldwych Theatre), Elsa Canesta (Rambert Dance Company) and Simply Heavenly (Young Vic/Trafalgar Studios). Her screen work includes Cuffs.

Kelly Sweeney’s credits include: This Is The Hour Gala and Elegies of Angels, Punks and Raging Queens (Royal Academy for Music) and Bunuel in the Labyrinth of the Turtles (Abbey Road Studios). She will be making her stage debut in Unexpected Joy.

Presented by Katy Lipson of Aria Entertainment and Jim Kierstead of Kierstead Productions, Unexpected Joy is directed by Amy Anders Corcoran and designed by Verity Johnson, with musical direction by Gareth Bretherton, lighting by Nic Farman and sound by James Nicholson.
