Theatre news

A RAGGLE-taggle group of animal thespians bring to life the Globe Playground, a new online space for five to 11 year olds, launched by Shakespeare’s Globe on Monday, July 15, 2013.

Globe Education with its expertise in engaging children through creative and active learning has designed a fun-filled, interactive web area which will entertain and keep young people playfully absorbed:

The colourful, image-led space is populated by the animal troupe: Hemmings the Bear, Slye the Fox, Perkins the Shrew, Condell the Stag, Kit the Cat and Dekker the Dog, collectively known as the Beasts of Shakespeare’s Globe. This band of merry players lead young fans through the Playground’s five sections: Make, Play, Read, Watch and Share.

Make features offline creative tasks, crafts and Elizabethan baking recipes; Play includes a selection of bespoke online games made in consultation with Globe specialists and featuring music by Jim Fowler, BAFTA-winning composer for SONY games; Read is full of fun facts, quizzes and storytelling activities; Watch hosts child-friendly short films and documentaries about backstage processes and creating theatre at the Globe; and Share allows users to upload their creative contributions with pictures, poems, photos and more, to become part of the Playground community.

Patrick Spottiswoode, Director of Globe Education at Shakespeare’s Globe said: “The Beasts of Shakespeare’s Globe open up a new and exciting digital playground, packed with ideas and activities, which playfully introduces young children to Shakespeare’s Globe and world.”

The Playground supports primary teaching at Key Stage 2 which features Shakespeare as a significant Tudor figure. However, it is designed primarily for young users to access as home entertainment, bringing Shakespeare, his world and theatre to life beyond the classroom through play. The web area will be accessed through Shakespeare’s Globe’s main site and is compatible with all major tablet devices.
