THE BROADWAY production of James Rado and Gerome Ragni’s 1967 rock musical, Hair, has posted closing notices at the Gielgud Theatre. Originally booking until January 8, 2011, it will now close on September 4, 2010, after a run of five months.

Previously Posted: Next year, the Broadway production of James Rado and Gerome Ragni’s 1967 rock musical, Hair, will transfer to London’s West End, where it opens at the Gielgud Theatre on April 14, 2010 (previews from April 1).

It has also been confirmed that the entire American cast will reprise their roles, the first time this has happened. Included are Gavin Creel, who previously appeared on the London stage in Mary Poppins, Caissie Levy and Will Swenson.

Hair centres on a group of hippies who champion peace, love and freedom against the backdrop of the Vietnam war draft during the 1960s. The story is set to Galt MacDermot’s score which features well-known songs such as Aquarius, Good Morning Starshine, Let The Sunshine In and of course, the title track.

Hair premiered off-Broadway in 1967, before transferring to the Great White Way and went on to win the 1969 Tony Award for Best Musical. It opened in London in 1968 with a cast including Elaine Paige, Richard O’Brien, Tim Curry and Paul Nicholas and ran until 1973.

The new production opened on Broadway in March this year and won the 2009 Tony Award for Best Revival of a Musical.

The revival is produced in London by the Public Theater, in association with Cameron Mackintosh who owns the Gielgud Theatre.

Avenue Q is currently booking at the Gielgud Theatre until March 20, 2010.
