Hide and Seek - Blue Elephant Theatre
Preview by Lizzie Guilfoyle
FOLLOWING sell-out performances in Tel Aviv, Shift Theatre is presenting a fully re-staged English version of Hide and Seek at Camberwell’s Blue Elephant Theatre – from April 29 to May 17, 2008.
In the aftermath of environmental devastation, where creatures roam the earth and humans are forced to scavenge or fight to survive, an old woman is followed by her memories, recycling and re-using them in the same way as the material objects around her. Is she still looking for hope? Can she find it in this dismal post-apocalyptic world? And more importantly, will she recognise it when she sees it?
Hide and Seek, a moving physical theatre show (with movement, puppets, and an original score), is a tragi-comic tale of hope and humanity in the most desperate of circumstances. It is directed by Tal Jakubowiczova, with original score by Hutch Demouilpied and costumes and puppets by Tomasin Cuthbert.
Tickets: £10, £8 concessions.
Time: 8pm.
The show will be accompanied by a visual art exhibition, in which artists will present their interpretations of the relationship of man to the natural world, and the destructive force of humans on the environment.
Time: Open during performance hours, or call the box office on 020 7701 0100 to arrange a gallery viewing.
Post-performance talks by representatives of environmental and arts organisations will also take place immediately after the show, on Thursday, May 8 and Thursday, May 15. Along with Hide and Seek’s director and some of the exhibiting artists, they will discuss the possible positive role the arts can take in environmental conservation. Speakers to be confirmed – check website for updated information.
Through these activities surrounding the show, Shift Theatre wishes to enter into a debate about the issues it believes to be important, and wants to encourage its audiences to become participants in an event rather than passive observers of a performance.
