Into the Hoods - George Sampson joins cast

Story by Lizzie Guilfoyle

GEORGE Sampson, the fourteen-year-old who won this year’s Britain’s Got Talent with his dance routine to Singin’ in the Rain, will join the cast of Into the Hoods for the final four weeks of the show’s run at the Novello Theatre.

From August 4 to August 30, 2008, Sampson will play one of the children who get lost in the hoods in this hip hop version of Stephen Sondheim’s 1989 musical Into The Woods.

Befriended by an evil landlord after they have played truant from school, the two boys are offered a room in his tenement block on the condition they work for him.

Reluctantly they embark on their mission, which leads them to the flats occupied by Spinderella, where they discover gold Adidas trainers; Lil Red, the owner of a bright red hoodie; Rap-on-Zel, the producer of the finest quality long weave in the city; and Jaxx (who lives in the basement), the owner of a white I-pod.

The show’s soundtrack features artists such as Gorillaz, Basement Jaxx, Barry White, Kanye West and Stevie Wonder.

Since winning Britain’s Got Talent, Sampson has appeared in the touring production of the show. Now with a role in the West End, he said, “This year is getting better and better. Into The Hoods is funky and young and I love the music in it – I can’t wait to get dancing on that stage.”
