Itsoseng - Soho Theatre
Preview by Lizzie Guilfoyle
THE South African hit, Itsoseng, winner of a Fringe First at this year’s Edinburgh Festival, will transfer to London’s Soho Theatre for a limited season – from September 8 to September 27, 2008.
Written and performed by Omphile Molusi, who was raised in the South African township of the title, Itsoseng is the story of Mawilla, a young man who not only watches the girl he’s loved since childhood descend into prostitution but also his beloved township wither, first under the strain of apartheid and then an inexperienced apathetic government.
In 2006, twenty four year old Molusi was the first recipient of the Royal Shakespeare Company’s Brett Goldin Bursary, an award which gives a young South African actor the opportunity to travel to Stratford-upon-Avon to receive classical training with the company.
Itsoseng is Molusi’s fourth play and the first to be staged in London.
Prior to its UK premiere in Edinburgh, Itsoseng played sold out seasons at the Baxter and Market Theatres in Johannesburg.
