Jesus Hopped the A Train

Preview by Lizzie Guilfoyle

SYNERGY Theatre Project is presenting Stephen Adly Guirgis’ high octane prison drama, Jesus Hopped the ‘A’ Train, at Trafalgar Studio 2 – from Tuesday, April 6 to Saturday, April 24, 2010.

Set in the notorious Riker’s Island prison, New York, Guirgis examines questions of faith and morality in this no holds barred journey of two men put away inside the US penitentiary system.

The play is described as an extraordinarily brutal study of faith, redemption and despair in a place where salvation seems to belong in another world.

The cast, ex-prisoners and professionals, one of whom spent four years as an officer in HMP Brixton, includes Ricky Copp, Ricky Fearon, Denise Gough, Theo Jones and Dominic Taylor.

The production is directed by Esther Baker, the Artistic Director of Synergy Theatre Project. Established in 2000, the company is dedicated to the rehabilitation of prisoners and ex-offenders.

Recent credits include Shelagh Stephenson’s The Long Road (Soho Theatre), Elmina’s Kitchen (HMP Brixton), On the Waterfront (Wimbledon Studio Theatre), Burn and Someone to Watch Over Me (Southwark Playhouse).

Jesus Hopped the ‘A’ Train is designed by Katy McPhee, with lighting by Tony Simpson and sound by Tom Hackley.
