Kinky Boots set to transfer to West End in 2015

Kinky Boots

Story by Jack Foley

HIT Broadway musical is to transfer to the West End next year (2015).

According to the show’s director, Jerry Mitchell, the award-winning show is just waiting for a vacancy to become available at one of four London theatres.

Featuring music by Cyndi Lauper, Kinky Boots follows a struggling shoe factory as it becomes enlivened by female impersonator, Lola. It is based on a true story.

Its Broadway success was underlined when the show picked up six trophies at last year’s Tony Awards, including best musical.

But the story has also previously been turned into a critically-acclaimed film, which saw 12 Years A Slave actor Chiwetel Ejiofor in the lead role.

Mitchell is currently in London to promote his new show, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, which opens at the Savoy Theatre on April 1, 2014 (previews from March 10).

But speaking to The Stage, he said that talks were ongoing to secure a West End theatre for the production for spring or autumn 2015.

“We have been offered four different theatres, but they all currently have shows in them. So, until any of them close, or announce they are closing, we won’t know for sure,” he said.
