Preview by Lizzie Guilfoyle
MERRY Opera celebrates Valentine’s week with its newly commissioned ‘jukebox opera’ Kiss me, Figaro!, which runs at Riverside Studios from Wednesday, February 12 to Sunday, March 2, 2014, as part of a national tour.
Written and directed by John Ramster, Kiss me, Figaro! is a new romantic comedy set backstage at the opera. The soprano diva has hated the handsome tenor ever since he jilted her at the altar but now he’s returned and wants her back.
Offstage romance and drama is played out for real when the curtain rises…
A ‘jukebox’ opera is a show that includes a wide range of operatic favourites, together with some more unusual repertoire and songs by Irving Berlin and his contemporaries – there are new translations and bespoke arrangements. It’s a treat for opera fans and a fun introduction for those new to opera.
The cast includes Daisy Brown, Felicity Buckland, Kristin Finnigan, James Harrison, Stephen Hose, Dario Dugandzic, Tom Lowe, Joe Morgan, Matthew Quirk, Daniel Roddick and Jenny Stafford.
Music Director and pianist is Stephen Hose, assistant director/stage manager is Rebecca Hanbury and choreographer is Carole Todd. The production is designed by Louise Carver, with costume design by Michelle Bradbury and lighting by Del Hoggan.
Times: Tuesday to Saturday at 7.30pm; Sunday at 5pm, plus Saturday matinee at 3pm.
The tour will also visit Bath (Feb 1), Chipping Norton (Feb 6), Diss (March 6), Great Yarmouth (March 7), Wallingford (March 8), Broadstairs (March 15), Tunbridge Wells (March 23), Beccles (June 15), The Scoop, London (June 18 – 20), Norwich (June 21) and Henley (June 28).
