JEFFERSON Performing Arts (USA) is presenting the London premiere of Lawrence, the musical based on the life of D.H. Lawrence, at Bridewell Theatre – from Tuesday, October 22 to Saturday, October 26, 2013.

Lawrence features music and lyrics by Glyn Bailey and a book by Keith Thomas, Glyn Bailey and Theasa Tuohy. Orchestrations are by Ricki Holmes.

Burned and banned during his lifetime, the works of D.H. Lawrence became the bestselling books of the latter half of the Twentieth Century, outselling even The Bible.

This musical adaptation of Lawrence’s life captures the spirit and passion of D.H. Lawrence the man, the lover and the notorious author of literary classics that include Sons and Lovers, Women in Love and the infamous Lady Chatterley’s Lover.

Aided by a brilliant musical score, Lawrence captures the passion and determination of an artist who overcomes the fires of criticism and contempt and rises like the Phoenix that symbolizes his quest.

Broadway star Bart Shatto (www.bartshatto.com), who starred as D.H. Lawrence in the 2009 Jefferson Performing Arts production of the musical, will reprise his role at the Bridewell Theatre. Shatto’s Broadway credits include Jean Valjean in Les Miserables, Quincey Morris in Dracula, Pvt. Elmore Hotchkiss in the Tony-nominated musical, Civil War and this season’s Tony-nominated Hands on a Hard Body.

He is a veteran vocalist with the gold/platinum-selling Trans-Siberian Orchestra, has performed extensively at Carnegie Hall and had the privilege of performing for President Bush and the First Lady at the annual Ford’s Theatre gala at the National Theatre in Washington D.C.

Shatto has also worked extensively in film and television and his current projects include the feature film Carry Me Home (starring Academy award-winner Cuba Gooding Jr.), Disney Jr.‘s animated series Gaspard and Lisa and a new musical feature film Life of an Actress (starring Tony-nominee Orfeh).

Directing the Jefferson Performing Arts production at the Bridewell is the show’s co-writer Keith Thomas, who has numerous stage and television directing credits. He was the director of the original production of Lawrence, starring Garth Bardsley and Tony nominee Christiane Noll, as well as a subsequent production of the show at the prestigious Nottingham Playhouse.

Lawrence is presented by special arrangement with Wesley R. Payne and 3 Walker Street, LLC.
