Legally Blonde - James and Smith confirmed

Duncan James as Billy Flynn

Preview by Lizzie Guilfoyle

DUNCAN James, Sheridan Smith and Alex Gaumond will star in the Broadway screen-to-stage musical Legally Blonde, which opens at the Savoy Theatre on January 12, 2010 (previews from December 5, 2009).

Based on the 2001 film starring Reese Witherspoon, Legally Blonde focuses on blonde sorority queen Elle (Smith) who, after being dumped by her boyfriend Warner (James), decides to follow him to law school in an attempt to win him back.

It includes the songs Omigod You Guys, Serious, The Harvard Variations, Chip On My Shoulder, So Much Better, Whipped Into Shape, Find My Way and the title song.

James was one of four singers who made up the boyband Blue which had 11 top ten singles between 2000 and 2004. Since the band split, James collaborated with Keedie on another chart success, I Believe My Heart, a duet from Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber’s The Woman in White. He was also a contestant on ITV’s Dancing on Ice. And in 2007, he made his West End debut as corrupt but charismatic lawyer Billy Flynn in the hit Kander and Ebb musical Chicago.

Although Smith is probably best known for her work in the long running BBC hits Two Pints of Lager and a Packet of Crisps and The Royle Family, she has also appeared on television in Grown Ups, Benidorm, Lark Rise to Candleford and Jonathan Creek.

Her stage credits include Bugsy Malone, Ancient Lights, Tinderbox, The Taming of the Shrew, A Midsummer Night’s Dream and, most recently, Little Shop of Horrors which transferred to the West End’s Ambassadors Theatre from the Menier Chocolate Factory. For her performance as Audrey, she was nominated for an Olivier Award.

Gaumond’s numerous theatre credits include Sunday in the Park with George, Desperately Seeking Susan, Guys and Dolls, The Full Monty, Kiss Me Kate and We Will Rock You. In Legally Blonde he will play Elle’s new love interest Emmett.

Legally Blonde, which closed on Broadway in October 2008, has a book by Heather Hach and music and lyrics by Nell Benjamin and Laurence O’Keefe. It will be directed and choreographed by Jerry Mitchell (Hairspray, The Full Monty) and designed by David Rockwell, with lighting by Kenneth Posner and Paul Miller, costumes by Gregg Barnes, sound by ACME Sound Partners and orchestrations by Christopher Jahnke.

Legally Blonde is currently booking until May 23, 2010.
