Matt Smith lands American Psycho musical in London
Story by Jack Foley
MATT Smith is to play serial killer Patrick Bateman in a musical version of the controversial novel American Psycho in London.
The former Doctor Who will headline the production at London’s Almeida Theatre from December 3, 2013, to January 25, 2014.
The show almost completely sold out within hours of Smith’s involvement being revealed – underlining the popularity of Doctor Who.
Set in the 1980s, American Psycho – by author Bret Easton Ellis – follows 26-year-old Manhattan investment banker Bateman as his sanity slowly disintegrates, turning him into a brutal murderer.
It was previously adapted for the big screen in 2000 with Christian Bale in the lead role.
The stage version will be directed by the Almeida’s new artistic director, Rupert Goold, who has developed the musical with his former company, Headlong.
He commented: “Matt Smith is a wonderful stage performer and the perfect actor not only to lead our exceptional cast but also my first show as artistic director here at the Almeida.”
And Smith himself added: “The opportunity to work with Rupert Goold, a director of great vision and flair, combined with the brilliant story and music, seemed like such a cool challenge.”
Smith has just completed filming his final scenes as the Timelord for the Christmas special, which will see his character regenerate into the 12th Doctor, played by Peter Capaldi.
He has also recently completed a part in Ryan Gosling’s directorial debut, How To Catch A Monster
