IT NOW seems likely that a revival of the classic 1937 musical, Me and My Girl, will transfer to London’s West End following its forthcoming eight-month tour, which commences on September 1, 2006, at the Theatre Royal Plymouth.

One of the old-fashioned musicals, Me and My Girl is the story of a 1930s cockney lad who inherits a fortune but must prove himself to be “an English Gentleman” before he can get his hands on the money.

With music by Noel Gay and lyrics by L Arthur Rose and Douglas Furber, it includes the songs Leaning on a Lamp Post, The Sun Has Got His Hat On, The Lambeth Walk and, of course, Me and My Girl.

The cast will include Richard Frame (Our House and, most recently, Promises Promises in Sheffield), Faye Tozer (Saucy Jack and the Space Vixens and Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat), Sally Smith, Sylvester McCoy, Trevor Bannister and Dillie Keane.

In 1985, Robert Lindsay – with a young Emma Thompson as his ‘girl’ – took the leading role. During its eight years in the capital and three years on Broadway, Lindsay picked up an Olivier and Tony Award for his performance.

A revival had been planned for May 2004 at the New London Theatre, but the continuing success of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat led to its cancellation.

Following Plymouth, Me and My Girl will visit Sheffield, Manchester, Malvern, Woking, Wolverhampton, Edinburgh, York, Leeds, Stoke-on-Trent, Liverpool, Bristol, Glasgow, Bradford, Birmingham, Newcastle, Cardiff and Southampton, where it will conclude at the end of April 2007.
