Menier Chocolate Factory - Jamie Lloyd directs Assassins in new season
THE Menier Chocolate Factory has announced its programme for Winter 2014/15 and it includes Stephen Sondheim’s Assassins. Directed by Jamie Lloyd, it runs from November 21 to March 7.
Described as a bold, surreal and sometimes disturbingly funny musical, Assassins tells the story of nine crazed would-be killers, each with one shared aim, to kill the President of the United States.
The plot weaves together the threads of American history allowing the real-life characters of John Wilkes Booth and Lee Harvey Oswald and others to speak, interact and even inspire each other in the pursuit of their murderous dreams.
Winner of five Tony Awards, the show is rightly considered as one of Sondheim’s greatest musical achievements. Based on an original idea by Charles Gilbert Jr, Assassins has a book by John Weidman.
Jamie Lloyd’s most recent work includes Richard III and the forthcoming East is East for Jamie Lloyd Productions at Trafalgar Transformed, Trafalgar Studios, a production venture with Ambassador Theatre Group; Urinetown The Musical, which transfers to the West End’s Apollo Theatre following its success at St James Theatre; and The Commitments (Palace Theatre).
Casting has yet to be announced.
Assassins will be followed – from March 11 to May 2 – by the UK premiere of Jonathan Tolins’ Buyer and Cellar, the hit US comedy which is currently touring America. It stars Ugly Betty‘s Michael Urie, who plays an out of work actor working in Barbra Streisand’s personal shopping mall in the basement of her home.
For his appearance in the show, which has already played in New York, Urie won a Drama Desk Award for best solo performance.
The season will also feature An Evening with Joan Plowright. On September 14, 2014, the English actress whose career has spanned over six decades, will discusses her career with director Richard Digby Day.
