My First Cinderella - Peacock Theatre

Preview by Lizzie Guilfoyle

ENGLISH National Ballet is presenting My First Cinderella at the Peacock Theatre (March 27 to April 6, 2013) prior to a regional tour that will visit Richmond Theatre (May 25 and 26).

Children aged 3 and above can get their first taste of classical ballet from English National Ballet’s Associate Artist, George Williamson, working with outstanding dancers cast from English National Ballet School (ENB2).

Created with youngsters in mind, the simplified version builds on the success of My First Sleeping Beauty, hoping to inspire long term relationships with the art form, reaching out to newcomers today and developing the audience of tomorrow.

The dancers will wear the sumptuous costumes from the company’s full production giving audiences the look, feel and quality of a classic ballet. However, the story and choreography will be adapted, making it more approachable, fun and suitable for younger audiences.

ENB2 is a new touring company featuring graduating dancers of outstanding potential from English National Ballet School in performances produced by English National Ballet, continuing the initiative to bring ballet to young audiences.

George Williamson is a graduate of English National Ballet School and this is his second commission from English National Ballet following his celebrated Firebird in 2012.

English National Ballet is delighted to announce a grant of £114,520 from the Leverhulme Trust to continue this initiative. The funding supports the next two years of the My First… series of ballets, to develop the dancers of the future and enable students to gain vital skills by working with a professional company.

George Williamson, Associate Artist, said:

“I’m extremely excited about choreographing a brand new Cinderella for the My First… series. It is so important to inspire younger audiences and have a specially created balletic world for them to fall in love with. I am also so pleased to be working with dancers from the English National Ballet School, helping them gain an understanding of what goes into being in a professional company. It’s fantastic to be a part of that development.”

With concept and direction by George Williamson and Loipa Araújo, My First Cinderella has choreography by George Williamson, music by Sergei Prokofiev, musical direction by Gavin Sutherland, design by David Walker, additional costumes by Wizzy Shawyer and lighting by Richard Howell.

My First Cinderella is suitable for ages 3+.
