Odyssey - Battersea Arts Centre
Preview by Lizzie Guilfoyle
THE PAPER Cinema and Battersea Arts Centre are presenting the world premiere of Odyssey, a highly original take on Homer’s epic tale – from February 6 (previews from February 2) to February 25, 2012.
Here, intricate, hand drawn marionettes are projected on to a white screen to create a unique, instant silent movie. The performance is accompanied by a rich score, performed live on a musical saw, viola, assorted keys and a bird box guitar, in the company’s most ambitious and large scale work to date.
Staged in a specially created, nautically themed environment which encompasses the audience, The Paper Cinema’s interpretation of the classic myth about a man on a ten year journey to return to his home and loved ones sees Odysseus battling storms and supernatural forces, traversing the centuries and encountering a host of colourful characters along the way.
The Paper Cinema’s previous work includes the critically acclaimed, Total Theatre Award-nominated Night Flyer and King Pest, which were staged at BAC in 2008, and The Rock Charmer, an extraordinary work projected on to the cliffs above Winspit as part of Inside Out Dorset Festival.
Tickets: £15, £10 concessions, £8 previews – available from the box office on 020 7223 2223 or online at www.bac.org.uk
Time: Monday to Saturday at 7.30pm.
