Oscar's World - Above the Stag Theatre
Preview by Lizzie Guilfoyle
TIM McArthur will direct Alex Flori’s new play Oscar’s World at London’s Above the Stag Theatre, where it runs from Tuesday, April 6 to Saturday, May 1, 2010.
Trapped in their deckchairs in an ocean paradise, Oscar and his parents watch the horizon. The spirit of adventure which drove his parents across the sea has run aground. His mother, forever expanding, guzzles tinned pudding; his father puts off today what he won’t do tomorrow and Oscar dreams of another world.
Is there any way out?
Oscar’s World is described as a story of missed opportunity, regret and ultimately the power of choice. The family sit on the beach day in day out repeating their mundane routines – imagine the Royle family in their living room glued to the TV. Glued to their deckchairs they have the power to change their lives but will they?
The cast includes Steven Serlin as Oscar (Imagine This, Desperately Seeking Susan, Grease, West End), Paul Tate as Nono (An Inspector Calls, The Mousetrap, West End), Carol Robb as Rose (The Emperor Jones, National Theatre) and Teresa Jennings as Ziberline.
Tim McArthur is resident director at Above the Stag Theatre, where his recent credits include Maurice and Silence! the Musical (as assistant director). His other work includes Casanova, Blink!, Coloured Lights, Obama on my Mind, and the European Premiere of Jack Heifner’s Seduction.
French born playwright Alex Flori has been living in London for 20 years. Drawn to Beckett, Sartre and Ionesco at an early age, he has honed his own style over the years, creating inner worlds where reality borders on the surreal. He brings the absurd out of the mundane and always retains a sense of hope.
Tickets: £10 (Tuesday, April 6 to Sunday, April 11); £12 (from April 13).
Times: Tuesday to Saturday at 7.30pm; Sunday at 6pm.
