Our Boys - Duchess Theatre
Preview by Lizzie Guilfoyle
OUR BOYS, Jonathan Lewis’ award-winning play, will receive its West End premiere at the Duchess Theatre, where it runs from October 3 (previews from September 26) to December 15, 2012.
Laurence Fox will lead a cast that also includes Arthur Darvill and Cian Barry.
Based on the author’s own army experience, Our Boys is both searingly honest and explosively funny.
Five young soldiers are killing nothing but time as they recover from injuries incurred in the line of duty. Suddenly, their daily routine of TV, lonely hearts ads and banter is shattered by the arrival of a young officer.
Fired by anger at the neglect of our wounded heroes, Our Boys remains as relevant now as was in 1993, when it won a Best New Play award. This first West End production comes from the creative team behind international hit Journey’s End.
Laurence Fox has previously appeared on stage in Peter Hall’s production of Mrs Warren’s Profession (Novello Theatre), Tis a Pity She’s a Whore (Southwark Playhouse) and Treats (Garrick Theatre). His screen credits include Lewis, Wired, Whatever Love Means and Colditz (TV); Elizabeth: The Golden Age, Becoming Jane, Gosford Park and W.E. (film).
Arthur Darvill’s recent stage work includes Doctor Faustus (Shakespeare’s Globe) and Terre Haute (Trafalgar Studios and on tour), for which he was nominated for the Outstanding Newcomer Evening Standard Award 2007. His television credits include Dr Who (as Rory Williams) and Little Dorrit.
Cian Barry’s stage credits include One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest (UK tour), The Member Of The Wedding (Young Vic) and The Rivals (Southwark Playhouse). On screen he has appeared in RPG, Holy Water, Titanic, Doctors and Shameless.
Our Boys will be directed by David Grindley, whose theatre credits include the Tony award-winning Journey’s End (Comedy Theatre/Broadway), A Midsummer Night’s Dream (Stratford, Ontario) and The Philanthropist (Broadway).
The Hurly Burly Show runs at the Duchess Theatre from July 2 to September 22, 2012.
