Paines Plough announce new joint Artistic Directors

Story by Lizzie Guilfoyle

PAINES Plough, the award-winning, internationally renowned, touring theatre company, has announced that George Perrin and James Grieve will succeed Roxana Silbert as joint Artistic Directors of the company.

They will take up the post in February 2010 when they will join Executive Producer Anneliese Davidsen.

Perrin and Grieve are currently Artistic Directors of nabokov, a new writing company they formed in 2001 to produce and tour new plays that respond to contemporary agendas, trends and events.

Their credits include the world premieres of Mike Bartlett’s Artefacts (The Bush) and Edmund White’s Terre Haute (Trafalgar Studios), both of which toured nationally before transferring to New York; as well as Jack Thorne’s 2nd May 1997, which was a co-produced with The Bush and is currently on tour.

Speaking about their appointment, Perrin and Grieve said:

“We are thrilled to have been appointed joint Artistic Directors of Paines Plough. We are looking forward to the opportunity to build on the company’s illustrious 35 year history and the incredible achievements of Roxana Silbert by continuing to present the highest quality work to the largest number of people across the country and internationally, cementing Paines Plough’s reputation as the UK’s national theatre of new plays.

“We are also delighted to announce the appointment of Joe Murphy who will take over from us as the new Artistic Director of nabokov. We will remain involved with nabokov at Board level.”

With their reputation for developing new writers, many of whom have become established names in UK theatre, Paines Plough’s recent credits include the award-winning Orphans by Dennis Kelly (Soho Theatre), Roaring Trade by Steve Thompson, and Dallas Sweetman by Sebastian Barry.
