Petrushka and Splish Splash! - Little Angel Theatre
Preview by Lizzie Guilfoyle
THIS Christmas, Islington’s Little Angel Theatre is presenting John Agard’s Petrushka – from November 21, 2009 to January 31, 2010.
Petrushka is a special puppet living a life without strings, but he yearns for true freedom beyond the control of his puppet master and for love in the arms of his elusive ballerina.
Drawing on the anarchic Russian character and using a host of colourful puppets, Petrushka re-tells the story made famous by the Stravinsky-scored ballet.
Petrushka is directed by Steve Tiplady and Lyndie Wright, with puppets designed and made by Lyndie Wright with Rebekah Wild.
Music by Igor Stravinsky, in the composer’s own piano duet version, is performed by David Nettle and Richard Markham (courtesy of Netmark Records). And licence to perform this music is given by kind permission of Boosey & Hawkes Music Publishers Ltd.
On Friday, December 11, there will be a special Russian Gala Night with all tickets at £20 and all proceeds going to the theatre’s Education and Participation programme. Tickets can be booked via the box office.
Although Petrushka is suitable for children over the age of 5, there will be some evening performances specially designed so that older children and adults can experience the production. You can catch these shows at 7pm on Saturday, December 5, Friday, January 8 and Wednesday, January 13.
Tickets: Adults: £12.50; children and concessions: £10; family tickets: £40 (4 tickets, maximum 2 adults, one family ticket per booking); preview weekend (November 21 and 22): all tickets £5; Fridays at Five: all tickets £5 at Friday 5pm shows.
NB: No children under the age of 5 will be admitted to the theatre and there are no baby friendly performances.
However, Little Angel Theatre is reviving a hugely popular show for its younger audiences. Splish Splash!, the story of a little fish on an unexpected adventure in the big wide world, runs from December 10, 2009 to January 31, 2010.
Written by Lyndie Wright, directed by Christopher Leith and with puppets made by Lyndie Wright and Peter O’Rourke, it’s suitable for ages 2 to 5. There will also be baby friendly performances at 10am on Sundays.
Tickets: Adults: £8; children and concessions: £6.
