Previously Posted: In July 2009, British actress Rachel Weisz will star as Blanche DuBois in a revival of Tennessee Williams’ 1947 Pulitzer Prize-winning play, A Streetcar Named Desire, at the Donmar Warehouse.
Widely considered a landmark play, A Streetcar Named Desire focuses on faded Southern belle Blanche DuBois, who visits her sister Stella and Stella’s brutish and sensual husband Stanley Kowalski, with devastating consequences.
Although Weisz is best known for her numerous screen roles – in The Land Girls, The Mummy, The Mummy Returns, About A Boy, Definitely Maybe and The Constant Gardener (for which she won an Academy Award) – she has appeared on stage in Design for Living, Suddenly Last Summer and, most recently (in 2001), The Shape of Things.
A Streetcar Named Desire was last produced in London – at the National Theatre – in 2002, when Trevor Nunn directed Glenn Close and Iain Glen in the key roles. And in 1951, the film adaptation starring Vivien Leigh and Marlon Brando, won four Academy Awards.
The new production will be directed by Rob Ashford, whose previous credits as choreographer include Guys and Dolls (Piccadilly Theatre), Evita (Adelphi Theatre) and Thoroughly Modern Millie (Shaftesbury Theatre). And just last year, he made his directorial debut – also at the Donmar – with Parade.
