Preview by Lizzie Guilfoyle

BRITISH actor Ralph Fiennes is to star in the UK premiere of The God of Carnage, a new comedy by French playwright Yasmina Reza, which is scheduled to begin performances at the Gielgud Theatre on March 7, 2008.

Fiennes plays a lawyer and the father of a nine-year-old boy who has hit another child in the school playground. As a result, he and his wife are invited to the victim’s parent’s home to discuss the matter.

Although Fiennes is probably best known for his numerous film credits, including Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, The Constant Gardener, Maid in Manhattan, The Avengers, The English Patient and Schindler’s List, his stage credits are equally numerous.

They include Brand, Coriolanus, Richard II, Hamlet and, most recently in London, the 2004 Barbican production of Julius Caesar. In 2006, he appeared as Frank Hardy in Brian Friel’s Faith Healer at Dublin’s Gate Theatre and on Broadway.

It was Reza who wrote the multi award-winning three-hander Art which ran for eight years in the West End and starred many high profile actors, among them Tom Courtney, Jack Dee, Albert Finney, Henry Goodman, Richard Griffiths, David Haig, Frank Skinner and Ken Stott.

Her other plays include Life x 3 and The Unexpected Man.

The God of Carnage will reunite the team behind Art – Christopher Hampton (translator), Matthew Warchus (director), and David Pugh and Dafydd Rogers (producers).

Macbeth, starring Patrick Stewart and Kate Fleetwood, is currently playing at the Gielgud Theatre.
