Responsible Other - Hampstead Theatre

Preview by Lizzie Guilfoyle

RESPONSIBLE Other, written and directed by Melanie Spencer, runs at Hampstead Theatre Downstairs from Thursday, June 20 to Saturday, July 20, 2013.

I have realised that what I want most of all is for Daisy’s life to be. Just. Uncomplicated. An uncomplicated life. What a gift.

Daisy is sixteen. She was normal. Now she is just an ill person with a disease no one has heard of. When the hospital tells her father Peter that she must travel regularly to London for specialist treatment, he worries about how he will manage. But there is only one person he can ask for help.

Melanie Spencer’s debut play is described as a moving and intimate study of a family fractured by illness and struggling to understand that which cannot be understood.

The cast includes Danielle Bux (as Miss Lewis), Andrew Frame (Peter), Tricia Kelly (Diane), Candassaie Liburd (Alice) and Alice Sykes (Daisy), with further casting to be announced.

Danielle Bux’ stage credits include Calendar Girls (Bristol Hippodrome). On screen, she has appeared in Silent Witness, One Thing Left to Do, We are the Freaks, Lakeland Falls and DB Shorts.

Andrew Frame’s stage work includes This House, Market Boy and Royal Hunt of the Sun (National Theatre), 66 Books (Bush Theatre), Wittenberg (Gate Theatre), Voyage Round My Father and The Winslow Boy (Salisbury Playhouse), Six Characters in Search of An Author (Headlong Chichester and West End), The English Game and Rough Crossings (Headlong Tour), Festen (Lyric Theatre) and The Crucible (Sheffield Crucible).

Tricia Kelly has previously appeared at Hampstead Theatre in Nina Raine’s Tiger Country and The Maths Tutor. Her credits elsewhere include Cannibals and The Gatekeeper (Royal Exchange Theatre), The Kitchen (National Theatre), Uncle Vanya (Belgrade/Arcola Theatre) and Pieces of Vincent (Paines Plough/Arcola Theatre).

Candassaie Liburd’s theatre credits include Baby Girl (National Theatre). On screen, she has appeared in Casualty, Perfect Parents and Valley of Children.

Alice Sykes’ stage work includes Polar Bears (Donmar Warehouse) and Misterman (Galway Arts Festival and National Theatre). Her screen credits include Midsomer Murders, Mad Dogs, Vera and Criminal Justice.

Presented by Made by Brick and Hampstead Downstairs, Responsible Other is designed by Emma Tompkins, with lighting by Katherine Graham and sound by Tom Hackley.
