Roots - full casting announced

Call The Midwife

Casting news

FULL casting has been confirmed for the revival of Arnold Wesker’s 1958 play, Roots, which runs at the Donmar Warehouse from October 8 (previews from October 3) to November 30, 2013.

Joining the previously announced Jessica Raine and Linda Bassett are David Burke, Lisa Ellis, Ian Gelder, Nic Jackman, Michael Jibson, Carl Prekopp and Emma Stansfield.

Roots is set in 1958 and Beatie Bryant has been to London and fallen in love with Ronnie, a young socialist. As she anxiously awaits his arrival to meet her family at their Norfolk farm, her head is swimming with new ideas. Ideas of a bolder, freer world which promise to clash with their rural way of life.

Roots, the remarkable centrepiece of Wesker’s seminal post-war trilogy, is a portrait of a young woman finding her voice at a time of unprecedented social change.

Although Jessica Raine (Beatie) is best known for playing the lead role in the BBC drama Call the Midwife, she has previously appeared on stage in The Changeling (Young Vic), Rocket to the Moon, Earthquakes in London, Gethsemane and Harper Regan (National Theatre), Punk Rock (Lyric Hammersmith) and Ghosts (West End).

Linda Bassett (Mrs Bryant), previously seen at the Donmar Warehouse in Phaedra, has recently appeared on stage in In Basildon and Love and Information, both at the Royal Court.

Roots is directed by James Macdonald and designed by Hildegard Bechtler, with lighting by Guy Hoare, sound by Ian Dickinson for Autograph and video design by Dick Straker.
