Rosmersholm - further casting announced
Preview by Lizzie Guilfoyle
PAUL Moriarty, Veronica Quilligan and Peter Sullivan will be joining Paul Hilton, Helen McCrory and Malcolm Sinclair in Mike Poulton’s new version of Ibsen’s Rosmersholm, which runs from May 15 to July 5, 2008, at the Almeida Theatre.
For generations the house of Rosmer has been a stronghold of religious and political conservatism, but great changes are taking place at Rosmersholm. The tragic suicide of his wife and the influence of the mysterious Rebecca West bring former clergyman Rosmer’s new libertarian beliefs into the light. But the past won’t easily release him.
Written in 1886, Ibsen’s play charts the struggle between freedom and the cruelty of conscience in an age of political division. Isolated by their beliefs and afraid of the force of their love, Rosmer and Rebecca’s journey races them to an astonishing conclusion.
Moriarty was last at the Almeida in Jonathan Kent’s productions of Richard II and Coriolanus. His other theatre credits include Market Boy, Pillars of the Community, Sing Yer Heart Out for the Lads, Racing Demon, Murmuring Judges and The Absence of War (National Theatre); King Lear, Antony and Cleopatra, Troilus and Cressida and Bingo (Royal Shakespeare Company); The Elephant Man, Saved and Love and Money.
His television credits include EastEnders, Pride and Prejudice, Jack of Hearts and A Touch of Frost.
Quilligan’s numerous theatre credits include A Pagan Place, From Cockney to Toffs and The Key Tag (Royal Court Theatre); Spring Awakening, The Way of the World and The Tempest (National Theatre); Wild Oates, Translations and The Glass Menagerie (Bristol Old Vic).
Her screen credits include Doctors, Centrepoint and Peak Practice (TV); My Zinc Bed, Listzomania and Robin and Marian (film).
