TACIT Theatre is presenting a new production of Justin Butcher’s one-man show, Scaramouche Jones, Or the Seven White Masks, in the Green Room at the newly refurbished Waggon and Horses pub in Surbiton – from June 26 to July 5, 2008.

Scaramouche Jones is a charismatic 99 year-old clown with a wealth of tales to tell from his journey through the ups and downs of the twentieth century. His story begins as the festivities commence on millennium eve, his 100th birthday, and the night of his final and most important performance.

He tells of his birth at the turn of the 20th century in Port-of-Spain, Trinidad; his childhood in slavery; his rambling across Saharan Africa; his gypsy life in Milan; and his eventual arrival in London, the home of his mysterious English father. And along the way he meets a spectrum of characters, each with their own profound effect on his life.

As the aged traveller removes his outer disguises, he reveals the loves, triumphs and tragedies that gave him his white masks. The role is played by Tom Daplyn who has starred in many Tacit Theatre productions, as well as The Picture of Dorian Grey (as Dorian) with the Bury Theatre Royal.

Scaramouche Jones is directed by Jonathan Constant. Although this his first Tacit production, his credits include Peter Shaffer’s Amadeus and, most recently, Terry Pratchett’s Wyrd Sisters at the CornerHouse.

Tickets: dinner and show £19.95; show only £7 – available online at www.tacittheatre.co.uk from May 16; available in person from The Waggon and Horses and from the Tourist Information Centre, Kingston Marketplace from June 1.

Time: 8pm.
