Shakespeare in Love - Tom Bateman and Lucy Briggs-Owen star
TOM BATEMAN and Lucy Briggs-Owen will play Will Shakespeare and Viola De Lesseps, the roles created on screen by Joseph Fiennes and Gwyneth Paltrow, in Lee Hall’s stage adaptation of Shakespeare in Love, which opens at the Noel Coward Theatre in July 2014.
Plagued by debt, tormented by writer’s block and in desperate need of a new hit, promising new playwright Will Shakespeare finds his muse in the form of passionate young noblewoman, Viola De Lesseps.
Their forbidden love soon draws everyone, including Queen Elizabeth herself, into the drama and inspires Will to write the greatest love story of all time, Romeo and Juliet.
Tom Bateman’s theatre credits include The Duchess of Malfi (Old Vic) and Much Ado About Nothing (Wyndham’s Theatre) opposite David Tennant and Catherine Tate.
Lucy Briggs-Owen has appeared in several productions for the Royal Shakespeare Company as well as Noises Off (West End) and most recently Fortune’s Fool (Old Vic).
Shakespeare in Love brings together a prestigious, multi award-winning creative team. Adapted for the stage by Lee Hall (Billy Elliot, The Pitman Painters) from the screenplay by Marc Norman and Tom Stoppard, the production is directed by Declan Donnellan and designed by Nick Ormerod, who together are the driving force behind the world-renowned theatre company, Cheek by Jowl.
