Shrek The Musical - Theatre Royal Drury Lane
Preview by Lizzie Guilfoyle
NEXT SUMMER, Shrek The Musical, the stage adaptation of the original 2001 Shrek film, will receive its West End premiere at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane, where it opens on June 7, 2011.
In a faraway kingdom turned upside down, things get ugly when an unseemly ogre shows up to rescue a feisty princes. Throw in a donkey who won’t be quiet, a bad guy with a short temper, a cookie with an attitude and a dozen or so other fairy tale misfits, and you’ve got the kind of mess that calls for a real hero – Shrek.
Produced by Sam Mendes’ Neal Street Productions and Dreamworks, Shrek The Musical is described as part romance, part twisted fairy tale and irreverent fun for everyone.
With a musical score by Jeanine Tesori and book and lyrics by David Lindsay-Abaire, Shrek The Musical will be directed by Jason Moore and Rob Ashford, designed by Tim Hatley, with lighting by Hugh Vanstone, sound by Peter Hylenski and choreographed by Josh Prince.
As yet, casting has not been announced.
Shrek The Musical premiered on Broadway in December 2008 and ran for just over a year. A revamped version, on which the West End production will be based, begins touring the US this month.
Oliver continues at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane until January 8, 2011.
The fourth (and apparently final) outing of the animated series, Shrek Forever After, opens in cinemas today (July 2, 2010).
