Sister Act - London Palladium

HOLLYWOOD actress Whoopi Goldberg is to co-produce a new musical stage adaptation of her hit 1992 film Sister Act, which opens at the London Palladium on June 2, 2009 (previews from May 7).
The story centres around disco diva Deloris Van Cartier who, after witnessing a mob-related murder, is put in protective custody – in a convent. Disguised as a nun, she finds herself at odds with both the rigid lifestyle and an up tight Mother Superior.
Using her unique disco moves and singing talent to inspire the choir Deloris breaths new life into the church and community, but in doing so blows her cover. Soon the gang is giving chase only to find them up against Deloris and the power of her new found Sister Hood.
Sister Act features a score by eight time Oscar winner Alan Menken whose credits include Little Shop of Horrors, Beauty and the Beast, The Little Mermaid and most recently the hit movie Enchanted. Lyrics are by Menken’s long-time collaborator Glenn Slater.
As yet no casting has been announced.
Although Goldberg won’t be appearing on stage, she has spoken about her involvement with the production: “If you are fortunate enough to be a part of something wonderful, I feel it’s important to pass the baton. The best way for me to be a part of this new incarnation of Sister Act is to make sure everyone knows it’s happening. The stage version of the show is fresh and new and I’m beyond thrilled to be part of it.”
Although Goldberg is best known for her many screen appearances – in films such as Ghost, The Color Purple, Jumpin’ Jack Flash and Soapdish – in 2002, she co-produced the original Broadway production of Thoroughly Modern Millie.
Sister Act is directed by Peter Schneider, designed by Klara Zieglerova and choreographed by Anthony Van Laast, with musical supervision by Michael Kosarin, costumes by Lez Brotherston, sound by Mick Potter, lighting by Natasha Katz and musical direction by Nick Skilbeck.
An earlier version of Sister Act, which has a book by Cheri and Bill Steinkellner, was seen in Pasadena, California in 2006 and in Atlanta, Georgia the following year.
The Sound of Music is currently booking at the London Palladium until February 28, 2009, although as yet there has been no official confirmation of its closure.
