Suffragettes on Stage Platform - National Theatre
ON TUESDAY, June 25, 2013, Samantha Bond, Janie Dee, Professor Maggie Gale (Chair in Drama at the University of Manchester) and Naomi Paxton will discuss the role of theatre in the fight for Votes for Women in Suffragettes on Stage.
The Actresses’ Franchise League was founded in 1908 as ‘a bond of union between all women in the Theatrical profession who are in sympathy with the Woman’s Franchise Movement’.
As well as a discussion, Suffragettes on Stage will include extracts from Edwardian Suffrage plays.
Samantha Bond’s credits include Passion Play (Duke of York’s Theatre), Amy’s View (National Theatre and Broadway), Downton Abbey (TV), and Miss Moneypenny in four James Bond films.
Janie Dee’s credits include Carousel (National Theatre), Noises Off (Old Vic and Novello Theatres), Harold Pinter: A Celebration (TV), and Me and Orson Welles (film).
Researcher and editor of The Methuen Drama Book of Suffrage Plays, Naomi Paxton has appeared on stage in How the Vote Was Won (Union Theatre) and Shadowlands (Wyndham’s Theatre).
Suffragettes on Stage, chaired by Genista McIntosh, will be followed by a book signing of The Methuen Drama Book of Suffrage Plays.
