Tell Me...Lies - Arts Theatre

Preview by Lizzie Guilfoyle

SUDDEN Productions is presenting the London premiere of Tell Me…Lies by French playwright Carole-Anne Le Foll at the Arts Theatre – from May 6 to May 17, 2008.

Combining physical theatre, drama and surrealism, Tell Me…Lies is about Abi, a young woman whose mother has just died. Abi is totally out of control, yet despite her increasingly bizarre and antisocial behaviour, her sister refuses to let her move out and on – the question is why?

Catherine Paskell (Top Bunk, White People) directs a cast that includes Sally Day (as Abi) who received critical acclaim for her last performance in Missing Marilyn.

She will be joined by Eleanor Samson (as Emma), Carole Weyers (as Fleur), Jonathan Taylor (as Derek) and Sean Carrigan (as Matt).

Speaking about Tell Me…Lies, Paskell said: “The play is written in a new style with a new voice. The fusion of text and physical language in Tell Me…Lies is exciting and a rarity to see on the British stage. This not only provides an exciting opportunity for me to work in a new style but also gives audiences access to a different theatrical experience, one which will allow them to examine the world and the way they live through another perspective.”

Sudden Productions’ work reflects contemporary culture. During the planning process, the company works closely with individuals and diverse communities, incorporating their ideas into the final production. When developing Tell Me …Lies, they created partnerships with mental health organisations such as SANE and Mind.

Their previous theatre productions include Blame Her! which dealt with teenage binge drinking (tour); The Exit, a play about teenage suicide (Edinburgh and tour); and Sister Jenni based around drug and alcohol abuse in young people (tour).

Movement director for Tell Me…Lies is Kitty Winter who choreographed the physical theatre sequences and character physicality; with design and costume by Rachel Denning.

Tell Me…Lies will premiere in France at the Festival Le Printemps des Langues before touring Birmingham/West Midlands, the Brighton Fringe Festival and the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.
