Casting news

TODAY – July 9, 2012 – Paul Bigley (Man) joins Andrew Alexander (Richard Hannay), Catherine Bailey (Pamela/Annabella/Margaret) and Stephen Critchlow (Man) in the cast of Patrick Barlow’s adaptation of John Buchan’s 1914 spy thriller, The 39 Steps, which is currently booking at the Criterion Theatre until March 30, 2013.

Now approaching its sixth birthday in the West End, The 39 Steps follows the incredible adventures of Richard Hannay – complete with stiff-upper-lip, British gung-ho and pencil moustache – as he goes on the run from police accused of a dastardly murder, dodges double-crossing secret agents, and becomes entangled with several devastatingly beautiful women.

Maria Aitken’s production of the John Buchan classic contains every legendary scene from the award-winning film – including the chase on the Flying Scotsman, the escape on the Forth Bridge, the first theatrical bi-plane crash ever staged and the sensational death-defying finale in the London Palladium. There’s even the memorable and controversial ‘stockings and suspenders’ scene!

Paul Bigley’s stage credits include The Lady In The Van (Bath Theatre Royal), Breaking the Code (Theatre Royal, Haymarket), One Way Pendulum (Old Vic), The Madness of George Dubya (Arts Theatre) and Much Ado About Nothing (Royal Exchange, Manchester). On screen, he has appeared in The Hour, Hustle, Vanity Fair, Shackleton, Midsomer Murders, Shakespeare In Love and Martha Meet Frank.

The 39 Steps is an international hit, having played in countries including Australia, Denmark, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Japan, Korea, Poland, Spain, South Africa, South America and Turkey. The production has also run on Broadway and toured North America.

The 39 Steps has also won many awards including an Olivier and Whatonstage.com for Best Comedy, two Tony Awards for Best Lighting and Best Sound Design, two Drama Desk Awards for Unique Theatrical Experience and Outstanding Lighting and the Molière Award for Best Comedy.

Presented by Edward Snape for Fiery Angel Ltd and Tricycle London Productions Ltd in association with the West Yorkshire Playhouse, The 39 Steps is designed by Peter McKintosh, with lighting by Ian Scott, sound by Mic Pool, and movement by Toby Sedgwick.
