The Box of Delights comes to Wilton's Music Hall for Christmas

Preview by Lizzie Guilfoyle

THIS Christmas, The Box of Delights by Piers Torday based on the novel by John Masefield receives its world stage premiere at Wilton’s Music Hall – from December 1, 2017 to January 6, 2018.

The classic festive novel tells the tale of young orphan Kay Harker, the boy who must save Christmas. On the train home from school for the holidays he meets an old magician, Cole Hawlings, who charges Kay with protecting his Box of Delights, a wondrous device with time travelling powers.

But when the old man mysteriously disappears, Kay faces the fight of his life to protect the Box, and with it, the people he loves. For Cole’s nemesis, the wicked sorcerer Abner Brown will stop at nothing to get his hands on the Box of Delights.

First published in 1935 by Poet Laureate John Masefield and adapted into a popular TV series in 1984, The Box of Delights is now re-imagined by Piers Torday whose work includes the bestselling Last Wild trilogy (Guardian Children’s Fiction Prize).

The Box of Delights is a timeless classic that has delighted children and adults alike for over 80 years, with the Guardian rating it second only to A Christmas Carol as the most festive of tales. Encapsulating folkloric magic and Christmas spirit, it is easy to see how the novel has influenced some of the great fantasy novels of recent times, including Philip Pullman’s His Dark Materials and C.S. Lewis’ Narnia series.

With everything from talking animals to snowy landscapes and flying cars, The Box of Delights is a true Christmas fairy-tale adventure and will be brought to life by an acclaimed creative team including Director Justin Audibert (Royal Shakespeare Company; National Theatre) and Olivier award-winning Designer Tom Piper.

Holly Kendrick, Executive Director of Wilton’s Music Hall, said: “I am absolutely thrilled that Wilton’s will be co-producing the world premiere of The Box of Delights. I have loved this book since I was a child and have wanted to see it on the stage for the last twenty years. It’s been worth the wait as we now have the most exceptional team and I have no doubt that Wilton’s is the prefect venue and as deliciously Christmassy as the story itself.”

The Box of Delights is presented by Wilton’s Music Hall and Hero Productions.
