The Bridge Project - Old Vic

Preview by Lizzie Guilfoyle

TOM Stoppard’s new version of Chekhov’s The Cherry Orchard and Shakespeare’s The Winter’s Tale will run in repertoire at the Old Vic from May 23 to August 15, 2009.

Directed by Sam Mendes (American Beauty), the two plays are the inaugural productions in the long awaited The Bridge Project, a transatlantic collaboration between the Old Vic and New York’s Brooklyn Academy of Music, and Neal Street Productions.

Described as a daring and droll meditation on bourgeois materialism and what remains in its wake, The Cherry Orchard focuses on an aristocratic Russian woman and her family as they return to the family’s estate – which includes a large and well-known cherry orchard – just before it is auctioned to pay the mortgage.

A tragicomedy that features disintegrating royal friendships and inklings of adultery, The Winter’s Tale is a magical testament to the follies of hasty judgement and the force of love as a means of redemption.

The British and American casts includes Simon Russell Beale, Michael Braun, Selina Cadell, Morven Christie, Sinead Cusack, Richard Easton, Rebecca Hall, Josh Hamilton, Ethan Hawke, Paul Jesson, Aaron Krohn, Dakin Matthews, Mark Nelson, Charlotte Parry, Jessica Pollert Smith, Gary Powell, Tobias Segal and Hannah Stokely.
