The Color Purple - principal casting announced

PRINCIPAL casting has been announced for the European premiere of the hit Broadway musical, The Color Purple, which runs at the Menier Chocolate Factory from July 15 (previews from July 5) to September 14, 2013.
The line up includes Cynthia Erivo (Sister Act, The Umbrellas of Cherbourg) as Celie, Nicola Hughes (Porgy and Bess – Olivier nomination for Best Actress in a Musical) as Shug, Adebayo Bolaji (Ghost the Musical) as Harpo and Abiona Omonua (Legally Blonde) as Nettie.
Full casting will be announced shortly.

Based on Alice Walker’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, the 1930s set family tale follows black teenager Celie as she travels through life and discovers the joy and pain of life and love in racially divided southern America.
A film version was released in 1985 starring Whoopi Goldberg and directed by Steven Spielberg. It received 11 Oscar nominations.
The Menier Chocolate Factory’s version will be directed and designed by Tony Award-winner John Doyle, who previously directed Road Show at the Menier and who is also widely known for Sweeney Todd and the current Off-Broadway production of Passion.
It will run from July 15 to September 14, 2013 (previews from July 5).
The score is comprised of jazz, ragtime, gospel and blues numbers and features music and lyrics by Grammy award winners Brenda Russell, Allee Willis and Stephen Bray.
Tickets go on sale to Chocolate Factory priority bookers from noon on April 22, and to the general public at 9am on May 1.
