A Doll's House - Christopher Eccleston joins cast

Christopher Eccleston as Dr Who

Preview by Lizzie Guilfoyle

CHRISTOPHER Eccleston, Toby Stephens, Tara Fitzerald and Anton Lesser will join Gillian Anderson in the cast of Ibsen’s 1879 classic, A Doll’s House, which runs at the Donmar Warehouse from May 19 (previews from May 14) to July 18, 2009.

In this new version by Zinnie Harris, the action takes place against the backdrop of British politics at the turn of the last century, a time when duty, power and hypocrisy ruled, and sees devoted wife Nora (Anderson) risking her reputation for her husband but subsequently questioning that devotion.

Eccleston’s numerous stage credits include Hamlet, Abingdon Square, Bent, Dona Rosita, A streetcar Named Desire and most recently, in the year 2000, Miss Julie. His film and television credits are equally numerous and include Shallow Grave, Jude, Cracker, Our Friends in the North, 28 Days Later, The Second Coming, Clocking Off and most recently, Doctor Who (as the ninth Doctor).

Stephens’ theatre credits include the title roles in Hamlet and Coriolanus (RSC), as well as Japes, The Royal Family and A Streetcar Named Desire (Theatre Royal Haymarket); Ring Around the Moon (Lincoln Center, New York), Phèdre/Britannicus (Almeida at the Albery), Betrayal (Donmar Warehouse) and The Country Wife (Theatre Royal Haymarket).

His screen credits include Jane Eyre, Wild West, The Best Man, Margaret, Five Little Pigs, Cambridge Spies, Perfect Strangers, The Tenant of Wildfell Hall, A View from the Bridge and Camomile Lawn (TV); and Dark Corners, Severance, The Rising, Die Another Day, Possession, The Great Gatsby, Eugene Onegin and Orlando (film).

Fitzgerald’s theatre credits include And Then There Were None, Antigone, Our Song, Hamlet (opposite Ralph Fiennes), A Doll’s House and Clouds. She is, however, best known for her many screen roles – in Brassed Off, I Capture the Castle, The Camomile Lawn, Sirens, Hear My Song and The Tenant of Wildfell Hall.

Lesser’s theatre credits include Julius Caesar, The Winter’s Tale, Cymbeline, Richard II, The Merry Wives of Windsor, Private Lives, The Birthday Party and Art. He was last seen on stage last year at the Royal Court in the UK premiere of David Hare’s The Vertical Hour.

Kfir Yefet (the BAFTA Award-winning short film It’s Not Unusual) will direct a cast that also includes Maggie Wells.

A Doll’s House is designed by Anthony Ward, with lighting by Hugh Vanstone.
