The Donmar's Hamlet transfers to Broadway

Story by Lizzie Guilfoyle

MICHAEL Grandage’s Hamlet, the final production in the Donmar’s year-long residency at the West End’s Wyndham’s Theatre, will transfer to Broadway (Broadhurst Theatre) for a limited 12-week season – from October 6, 2009 (previews from September 12).

The production, which stars Jude Law in the title role, completes its West End run on August 22, 2009, before embarking on an already sold-out run at Kronberg Castle, in Elsinore, Denmark – from August 25 to August 30.

Law last appeared on stage in New York in 1995, making his Broadway debut in Jean Cocteau’s Indiscretions (Les Parents Terribles), for which he received a Tony Award nomination.

Other members of the Donmar company, which includes Penelope Wilton and Kevin R McNally, are also expected to reprise their roles on Broadway.

Hamlet is the Donmar’s third Broadway transfer under the artistic directorship of Michael Grandage, following the Tony Award-winning Mary Stuart, which is currently playing at the Broadhurst Theatre, and Frost/Nixon.

Speaking about the transfer, Grandage said: “Following our recent productions of Frost/Nixonand Mary Stuart, I am delighted we have been invited to bring another of our productions to Broadway. We feel very privileged to be part of such a vibrant theatre community and it is exciting to think that so many people will get to engage with our work and to witness Jude Law’s extraordinary performance.”
