The Events - new cast for 2014

The Events

Casting news

CASTING has been announced forATC’s 2014 production of David Greig’s The Events, which visits London’s South Bank Centre on April 5 and the Young Vic from July 10 to August 2.

Amanda Drew, who was last seen on stage in the National Theatre’s production of The Curious Incident of The Dog in the Night-time and is known to millions for her portrayal of Dr May Wright in the long running soap EastEnders, will take the role of Claire for a limited period.

Drew last worked with director Ramin Gray in ATC’s previous work Illusions. She will tour with the production until the end of April when her part will be recast for the Young Vic run and beyond (details to be announced).

The role of The Boy is to be played by Clifford Samuel. Regarded as one of the most promising young actors of his generation, Samuel’s previous stage work includes Statement of Regret (National Theatre) and Two Gentlemen of Verona (RSC). His film credits include the part of the legendary 1970s drummer Charly Charles in the Ian Dury biopic Sex and Drugs and Rock ‘n Roll.

A collaboration between ATC’s acclaimed Artistic Director Ramin Gray and celebrated playwright David Greig, The Events explores the impact of a horrific politically motivated crime on a small community, examines the nature of forgiveness, reconciliation and tolerance and asks how far understanding will stretch in the face of atrocity.

With a brand new cast and featuring a different local choir every night performing a soaring soundtrack by Irish composer John Browne, what unfolds is a tale of tragedy, obsession and the destructive desire to fathom the unfathomable.

When The Events premiered at The Traverse in Edinburgh last August it was immediately hailed as one of the standout theatrical productions of the year. Now, after selling out at The Young Vic last Autumn it returns there this Summer as well as embarking on a major national and US tour throughout 2014.

The production has also been translated into German and Norwegian. It was staged at Schauspielhaus Vienna from November 2013 to January 2014 and will be seen at Brageteatret in Drammen later this Spring.
