Preview by Lizzie Guilfoyle

PETER Bowles, Jenny Seagrove and Colin Buchanan star in Patrick Hamilton’s The Governess, which visits Richmond Theatre (June 10 to June 15, 2013) as part of a UK tour.

Patrick Hamilton’s little known thriller was unearthed by leading theatre critic turned playwright Nicholas de Jongh who brought it to the attention of Bill Kenwright via the British Library.

The Governess features Detective Rough, a character later made famous by the author’s best known play Gaslight, as he tackles the case of a missing infant following the arrival of ‘The Governess’.

The sinister Governess Fry, having taken a position in the Drew household, manipulates and deceives all around her. And when the Drew’s infant vanishes, the house is thrown into turmoil.

One of Britain’s most distinguished actors, Peter Bowles plays Detective Inspector Rough. Bowles is much-loved for his starring roles on television – in To the Manor Born (as aristocratic Richard Devere), Rumpole of the Bailey, Only When I Laugh, Lytton’s Diary and The Irish RM. He was most recently seen on stage in Sheridan’s The Rivals opposite Penelope Keith and Hay Fever alongside Dame Judi Dench, both at the Theatre Royal Haymarket.

Jenny Seagrove is well known on television for her portrayal of barrister Jo Mills in BBC TV’s Judge John Deed, the Bafta award-winning legal drama which also starred Martin Shaw and ran for a record six years. She also starred as Emma Harte in the Emmy Nominated hit series A Woman of Substance. The most recent of her numerous theatre credits include Noel Coward’s Volcano (Vaudeville Theatre) and Clifford Odet’s The Country Girl (Apollo Theatre) again with Martin Shaw.

Although Colin Buchanan is best known for his role as Pascoe to Warren Clarke’s Dalziel in the long running BBC series Dalziel and Pascoe, he has also starred in many well-known series including A Touch of Frost and All Quiet on the Preston Front. His West End stage credits include Art and La Ronde.

Completing the cast of The Governess are Carolyn Backhouse, Libby Gore, Lydia Orange, Robert Rees, Matthew Rixon and Mary Ryder.

Presented by Bill Kenwright and directed by Roy Marsden, The Governess is designed by Simon Scullion, with lighting by Douglas Kuhrt and sound by Martin Hodgson.

The tour opens at the Theatre Royal, Windsor on Tuesday, May 14, 2013, before continuing to Darlington and Richmond.
