The Lady from the Sea - Arcola Theatre
Preview by Lizzie Guilfoyle
ARCOLA Theatre in association with Silkensaw is presenting Frank McGuinness’ new adaptation of Henrik Ibsen’s The Lady from the Sea – from April 29 to May 31, 2008.
Described as a sensuous and erotic play about the power of the past, The Lady from the Sea centres on Ellida who is consumed by her longing for the sea. Trapped in an unhappy marriage and loathed by her stepdaughters, she is drawn to the ocean, to the promise and ecstasy of the unknown.
However, the startling arrival of a dark stranger awakens Ellida, stirs her desires and lures her back to the water’s edge, forcing her to confront both the past and a desire for freedom that could destroy her.
The Lady from the Sea stars Lia Williams and is directed by Hannah Eidinow.
McGuinness’ many plays include Observe the Sons of Ulster Marching Towards the Somme, Gates of Gold, The Bread Man, Innocence, Dolly West’s Kitchen, The Bird Sanctuary, Carthaginians, Sleeping Like Magpies and There Came A Gypsy Riding. He has also translated many works, including The Storm, Phaedra, Hecuba, Peer Gynt, A Doll’s House, Electra, Hedda Gabler, Three Sisters and Yerma. And his film and TV credits include Dancing at Lughnasa, Henhouse and Scout.
