The Last Five Years - Lauren Samuels stars
Preview by Lizzie Guilfoyle
OVER THE Rainbow finalist Lauren Samuels will star in a new production of Jason Robert Brown’s one act musical The Last Five Years, which runs at the Tabard Theatre from February 11 (previews from February 9) to March 5, 2011.
Taking the conventions of musical theatre and sending them spinning into the 21st century, The Last Five Years explores the five-year relationship between Jamie (Christopher Pym) and Cathy (Samuels) as they fall in and out of love.
It’s a story told from two angles: Cathy’s story travels backwards in time, from the end of their marriage to when they first met, while Jamie’s story traces the relationship from the beginning to its sad conclusion.
And the music combines classic Broadway with funk and rock.
After coming third in BBC TV’s Over the Rainbow, a talent contest to find a young actress to play Dorothy in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s revival of The Wizard of Oz, Samuels made her West End debut in the the musical Grease at the Piccadilly Theatre, where she continues in the role of Sandy until January 2011.
A rising star of musical theatre, Christopher Pym’s credits include Seymour in The Little Shop of Horrors, Guy in Howard Goodall’s Girlfriends, Herb Lee in My Favourite Year and Michael in I Do! I Do!
The Last Five Years will be directed by Drew Baker, with musical direction by Lee Freeman and design by Colin Mayes.
The Last Five Years debuted at Northlight Theatre in Skokie, Illinois in 2001, and opened off-Broadway in 2002. The production won the Drama Desk Awards for outstanding music and lyrics as well as receiving Drama Desk nominations for Outstanding Musical, Outstanding Actor, Outstanding Actress, Outstanding Orchestrations, and Outstanding Set Design.
It also received the Lucille Lortel nomination for Outstanding Musical and Outstanding Actor, and the Outer Critics’ Circle Award nomination for Outstanding Off-Broadway Musical. The show has since been produced around the world and received its UK premiere at the Menier Chocolate Factory in 2006.
