The Lyons - Tom Ellis stars at the Menier Chocolate Factory

Preview by Lizzie Guilfoyle

TOM Ellis (Miranda) will star alongside Katy Secombe, Charlotte Randle and Ben Aldridge in the European premiere of Nicky Silver’s play, The Lyons, which runs at the Menier Chocolate Factory from September 19 to November 16, 2013.

In this American hit comedy, The Lyons have gathered around the hospital bed of their dying father Ben. However, surface compassion soon gives way to bickering, sniping and betraying each other’s secrets.

This exploration of a fractured family is as savagely funny as it is heart-breaking.

Tom Ellis, who plays Ben’s son Curtis Lyons, is best known for his TV roles in Miranda (as Gary) and The Secret of Crickley Hall. However, he has previously appeared on stage in One Minute (Crucible Sheffield and Bush Theatre) and Shang-A-Lang (Chichester Festival Theatre).

Charlotte Randle plays Ben’s daughter Lisa Lyons. Her theatre credits include The King’s Speech (Wyndham’s Theatre), All About My Mother (Old Vic) and Don Carlos (Crucible and Gielgud Theatre).

Katy Secombe, daughter of popular entertainer Harry Secombe, plays the Nurse. Her stage work includes Darling of the Day (Union Theatre), Les Miserables (Queen’s Theatre), Hay Fever (Rose Theatre, Kingston) and Mamma Mia! (Prince of Wales Theatre).

Ben Aldridge, who plays Brian, has also appeared on stage in Romeo and Juliet (Shakespeare’s Globe), Shelf Life (Old Red Lion Theatre) and Fish and Company (Soho Theatre). On television, he played Daniel Parish in Lark Rise to Candleford.

Recently seen on Broadway, The Lyons will again be directed by Mark Brokaw, whose credits include Cinderella (currently on Broadway), This Is Our Youth, As Bees in Honey Drown and How I Learned to Drive. He also directed Lobby Hero both in New York and at the Donmar Warehouse (which transferred to the West End’s Ambassadors Theatre).

The Lyons will be designed by Jonathan Fensom, with lighting by Jason Taylor and sound by Gregory Clarke.

The Color Purple continues at the Menier Chocolate Factory until September 14, 2013.
