Preview by Lizzie Guilfoyle

THE Night of 1000 Voices returns to the Royal Albert Hall on Sunday, May 2, 2010, with a double celebration – its own tenth anniversary and the 80th birthday of American composer and lyricist Stephen Sondheim.

Also celebrating an anniversary – it’s 50th – will be Leukaemia Research, the event’s chosen charity.

Leading the line-up will be Kerry Ellis, Philip Quast and Broadway’s Adam Pascal. They will be accompanied by the City of London Philharmonic and the massed choirs of Sing Live UK and USA under the musical supervision of David Firman.

The show, hosted by Aled Jones, will also feature The Night of 1000 Voices regulars Teri Bibb, Kenneth Nichols and David Michael Johnson, who returns with his “show-stopping” Jesus Christ Superstar.

There will also be a selection of the “most requested favourites” from the last ten years, such as You’ll Never Walk Alone, The Tonight Quintet, It Ain’t Necessarily So and Don’t Cry for me Argentina, as well as numbers from We Will Rock You and The Rocky Horror Show featuring Christopher Biggins.

Hugh Wooldridge, creator and director of The Night of 1000 Voices, said: “This evening is a must for all who love musicals. You will hear the best performers in the world performing some of the greatest songs in the world’s finest venue. Come and join in the fun and help raise funds for a splendid charity whilst raising the roof of the Royal Albert Hall.”

The Night of 1000 Stars will be just one of many events and productions celebrating Sondheim’s 80th birthday, which falls on March 22, 2010. Also announced is the Donmar’s revival of the composer’s 1994 musical Passion.
