The Rehearsal Room Presents - Pleasance Theatre

Preview by Lizzie Guilfoyle

PLAYWRIGHT/performer and broadcaster/journalist Yasmeen Khan is hosting and curating the second The Rehearsal Room Presents, a salon-style night of theatre featuring half-hour rehearsed readings of two new plays, at the Pleasance Islington – on Wednesday, May 21, 2014.

There will also be a Q&A with special guest John Yorke, ex Controller of BBC Drama, current MD of Company Pictures and author of best-selling screenwriting book, Into The Woods. Live music will come from hotly-tipped electronic duo Moonrags.

The first reading will be Commercial Broke. A comedy by Yasmeen Khan about three actors waiting to be auditioned for a beer commercial, it asks: will diversity and advertising make for a good cocktail?

The second reading featured will be Porcelain Dolls, by Yasmin Whittaker-Khan, writer of critically acclaimed play, Bells. Porcelain Dolls is a taut drama set in Pakistan’s eunuch community.

The Rehearsal Room Presents puts the audience at the heart of the evening – each reading will be followed by a short Q&A where audience members get to give their feedback and also discuss the issues raised in each piece; a theatrical question time over drinks and nibbles.

This is the second in a series of evenings based on the ethos of Yasmeen Khan’s arts and culture blog,, combining theatre writing with other art forms. The series of evenings aims to provide a platform for new work alongside more established voices and for BME writers and performers to be programmed parallel to mainstream artists. Similarly, the blog features interviews, previews etc with established names alongside industry new-comers and ‘ones to watch’.

Yasmeen Khan is a regular voice on radio, including presenting documentaries on Radio 4. Her theatre writing includes the play Break The Floorboards, which was recently awarded best live event at the Asian Media Awards and toured around the UK in 2013.
