THE RETURN of the Soldier, a new musical with book and lyrics by Tim Sanders and music by Charles Miller, runs at Jermyn Street Theatre from September 2 to September 20, 2014.
Coinciding with the centenary of the First World War, The Return of the Soldier is a new musical adaptation of Rebecca West’s remarkable 1918 novella of the home front.
An intensely bitter-sweet tale, it dissects the very different love of three women for one man. When Christopher returns from the war, shell-shocked, there are profound consequences for each of them.
With its rich and arresting score, this powerful new drama becomes an eloquent treatise on the nature of love, truth, memory and loss. In the end, only an extraordinary sacrifice will restore the fragile status quo.
Leading the cast as Captain Christopher Baldry is Stewart Clarke, whose previous credits include Godspell in Concert, Loserville and Ghost.
Completing the cast of five are Zoë Rainey (Oh What A Lovely War, Wicked), Laura Pitt-Pulford (Marry Me a Little, The Light Princess), Michael Matus (Canterbury Tales, Lend Me a Tenor) and Charlie Langham.
The Return of the Soldier is directed by Charlotte Westenra, whose credits include We the People (Shakespeare’s Globe), Kiss of the Spider Woman (Donmar Warehouse), Darfur- How Long is Never? (Tricycle Theatre) and When Five Years Pass (Arcola Theatre).
