The Scoop's free theatre season 2010
Preview by Lizzie Guilfoyle
THIS YEAR, Steam Industry’s 8th annual summer season of free theatre at The Scoop at More London amphitheatre takes place from August 5 to September 5, and includes Toad Hall! and Don Juan in Love.
The Scoop at More London, winner of the 2006 Peter Brook Award for ‘up and coming theatre’ and for the innovation of a season of free and accessible theatre, has now firmly established itself as one of London’s unique theatregoing experiences.
Toad Hall! is adapted from events in Kenneth Grahame’s The Wind in the Willows by Steam Industry Free Theatre, who bring their regular mix of comedy, puppetry, song, dance and adventure to a new outdoor adaptation of the family classic that’s fun for all ages.
Can the fun loving, attention seeking Mr Toad, here based on London Mayor Boris Johnson, ever be persuaded to take life seriously? Join his friends Mole, Ratty and Badger as they help him through a series of scrapes and japes, defending Toad Hall (or should that be City Hall?) from the ever watchful weasels who’d steal it away.
Performance dates and times: Thursdays to Sundays at 6pm.
Running time: Approximately 1 hour.
Signed performance: Thursday, August 26 at 6pm.
And on June 15 (at 1pm), the young peole of Southwark perform their own tale of Mr Toad and the search for his X Factor.
In Don Juan in Love audiences can join history’s greatest lover as he charms and murders his way through swash-buckling adventure and heart-stopping drama. But as the sun sets over the beautiful Scoop amphitheatre vengeful ghosts gather to teach him there are consequences to a life of breaking hearts and destroying families.
In this London premiere of the beautiful 1839 dramatisation, by celebrated Spanish romantic José Zorrilla, it’s a brave young woman who proves to be the Don’s downfall and his chance of salvation.
Performance dates and times: Thursdays to Sundays at 8pm.
Running time: Approximately 1 hour 30 minutes.
Signed performance: Thursday, September 2 at 8pm.
NB: There will be post-show discussions about both shows with members of the cast and creative team on Sunday, August 8, 15, 22 and 29 after the performance of Don Juan in Love.
Both shows are performed by the same actors and you can see both shows every night. No need to book – just turn up and take a seat! There’s room for 1000 people at each performance. And the actors perform in almost any weather!
