The Unimportant History of Britain - Above the Stag

Preview by Lizzie Guilfoyle

ROBERT Blackwood and Nick Cowell’s The Unimportant History of Britain runs at London’s Above the Stag Theatre from October 13 to October 31, 2009.

This comic, sketch-based romp, which takes audiences through the portals of British history, features a murder investigation involving a henge, a wheel and some loose forays into forensic science; Henry VIII getting a makeover and shoulder pads in a brazen re-interpretation of a 1980s Texan soap opera; Admiral Nelson’s boisterous cousin Enoch turning shy, wibbly Britons into Great Britons; and Gandhi, Stalin, Churchill and Houdini debating together under the rules of Just a Minute.

Writers Blackwood and Cowell re-invigorate English history with their own very special take on what almost certainly did happen, what might have happened, and what definitely did not happen. While fresh and innovative material blends with the occasional nod to the great pantheon of British comics.

The Unimportant History of Britain is described as a show for families, business people, au pairs and window cleaners, to warm the hearts and induce great laughter of all kinds.

Martin Cort directs a cast that includes Blackwood and Cowell, and Polly Eachus.

Tickets: £12, £10 concessions.

Times: Tuesday to Saturday at 7.30pm, Sunday at 6.30pm.
